For example Fuzzy Logic adapted a Makita jigsaw to make precision felted textiles. Thaw found a new way of casting ordinary plaster of paris using the ephemeral property of ice. Sip developed a design inspired by the ‘Elling’ Sideboard of the late Gerrit Rietveld. A series of square, hexagonal, and circular rods and tubes conceal the cabling between the components. The timber wall panelling is perforated with 3 alternative shapes, so creating a decorative grid pattern. This is the foundation that allows for an almost infinite variation of shelving length and depth. Brass rods inserted into the holes both support timber shelves, and provide bookends. They were making extensive renovations to a Victorian terrace house in South London, and wanted to create a unified and very personal space. Our custom-made pieces responded to the materials of brass and light grained wood prevalent in her interior design. SIP’s scheme involved panelling the walls with timber that was pierced with a grid of cut outs to receive brass supports for the shelves, create bookends and introduce lighting. Circles and squares were used for brackets and hexagons for stops, these profiles not only created a rhythm across the panelled wall but were also echoed in the additional furniture made for the room. The shelves were made from carefully selected slow growing Canadian Douglas Fir confirming our dedication to sourcing timber of the highest quality. The clients wanted a bold and original design that complemented the proportions of the room, whilst providing optimum storage and enjoyable space for dressing. Each plank was individually selected from the timber yard and chosen for specific parts of the wardrobe, chest of drawers and mirrors. A centrally placed floor-to-ceiling storage unit was divided into quickly accessible space for clothes used on a daily basis,and a ‘deeper’ storage for out of &nbsp;season clothes or rarely worn pieces. Hexagonal and square rods placed together form the table legs, with their profiles appearing on the table surface as geometric features. These works result from the unlikely combination of powdered plaster and frozen water . The first example of this work is a simple three-legged stool which we cast in ice and then buried in powdered plaster. The water from the melting ice hardens the plaster and creates a physical record of the transition, which is then excavated from the material. The consequences of using different plaster compositions have a profound impact on the resulting surface texture, each type of plaster producing its own distinctive appearance. This video shows the alchemy of the process.
